We are pleased to announce the promotion of Stephen Cowhey to partner in our market-leading Real Estate team.

Stephen supports clients through the entire real estate project lifecycle, from acquisition, development and financing to operation and sale. Having worked on some of the largest renewable transactions in Ireland, he has significant expertise in advising both project developers and funders.

Stephen recently advised SSE on its joint venture with Bord Na Móna for the development of wind farms across eight of Bord Na Móna’s repurposed bogs. These projects aim to develop up to 800MW of new renewable energy, enough to provide power to over 450,000 homes.

Vanessa Byrne, Partner and Co-Head of Real Estate, commented: “Stephen brings a wealth of specialised knowledge across all areas of real estate, with a particular focus on renewable energy. His deep understanding of the complexities and market forces in this field makes Stephen an invaluable asset to our team and to our clients. His appointment further underscores our commitment to foster the best legal talent to navigate the current dynamic legal environment.”

Michael Doran, Partner and Co-Head of Real Estate, said: "We are very pleased to welcome Stephen to the partnership. Stephen's promotion ensures we will continue to provide clients with the highest levels of commercially-focused advice, reinforcing our firm's dominant position in the Built Environment and Energy sectors."

Stephen Cowhey added: “Sustainability and the energy transition is critically important, so I am proud to work with clients to help Ireland meet our climate targets.

Advising on the property elements of major energy projects such as wind, solar and storage is a core area of my practice. Ensuring that the right property structure is implemented from the start means that projects are future-proofed for investment and sale. I am also engaged in helping clients on emerging energy technology projects such as the development of hydrogen-ready power plants.”

Stephen is a graduate of the University of Limerick. His professional memberships include the Law Society of Ireland, Wind Energy Ireland and the Irish Solar Energy Association.

The firm now employs over 600 staff covering Ireland, the UK and USA, dedicated to delivering bespoke, innovative client solutions.
