MHC Moments Hannah McHugh

Welcome to the next edition of MHC Moments. In this series, we shine a spotlight on the contributions our people make to our community and the experiences that make us who we are. Our colleague Hannah McCarthy shares her experience of doing Shine a Light.

Tell us about your experience with the Shine a Light Sleep Out

During my rotation in Real Estate, a colleague had begun the organising of the Focus Ireland Sleep Out and asked if I would get involved. I knew about the Sleep Out because friends of mine had done it before, so I was happy to take part. We both split out tasks to ensure the night ran smoothly. Focus Ireland prepares helpful information packs specifically for organising a workplace Sleep Out which proved incredibly helpful both in terms of ensuring we had a plan for the evening and giving us an insight into the impact of the Sleep Out every year. The night itself was challenging but inspiring, and a great bonding experience between people from all across the firm.

What did you find most rewarding

When organising the Sleep Out, we set a team goal of €5,000. However, thanks to the time and effort of so many colleagues who signed up to take part and fundraise at an individual level, we exceed this goal by €20,000! It was incredibly rewarding to see everybody there on the night knowing the work that everybody put in to raise these funds, and to have so many people give up their Friday night to take part.

Did you encounter any challenges

The main challenge in the leadup to the event was to ensure we chose a spot for the Sleep Out that was safe and had the option of some sort of shelter in case it rained. With the help of Facilities, we were able to set up sheeting down the side of South Bank House which provided the perfect spot for the night. Luckily, we had a dry night, so we only had to worry about keeping warm. Sleeping outside in itself was a challenge for everybody who took part, but I think it really helps to raise awareness and educate on the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness.

How will the funds raised be used to support the cause

The Focus Ireland Sleepout is a key annual event that raises funds for Focus Ireland's vital services. In Ireland today, there are nearly 14,000 people experiencing homelessness. Each year, following the sleepout, funds raised go directly to where there is the greatest need that year. This may be to meals in the Focus Ireland Coffee Shop, to information centres for those facing homelessness to provide critical advice and information, to Child Support Workers, or to Focus Ireland's education service, Preparation of Education, Training & Employment.

What advice would you give to other staff members considering getting involved in fundraising opportunities

To set aside some time and do it! We are lucky to be in a firm that engages with and supports so many excellent charities through MHC RISE each year. There are so many ways to get involved that fit every schedule, be it organising fundraising events, attending the various events taking place, getting involved in the pro bono opportunities in the firm, or simply donating. It's a great opportunity to support a cause you care about while also meeting new people across the firm.

When it comes to Corporate Social Responsibility, we see it as a natural fit with the way we do business. Find out more about our Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives.
