MHC Life: Eithne Redmond
This week in our MHC Life series, we speak to Eithne Redmond from our Debt Recovery team. Eithne talks us through a typical day and her favourite holiday destinations.
Tell us a bit about you and your career journey to MHC – what inspired you to get into this career?
My working career commenced back in back in October 1980 straight out of secretarial college in a small Dublin firm of solicitors who specialised in Debt Recovery. It was a baptism of fire given that I had never set foot in a solicitor's office before. In those days, you learned on the job. I came to Mason Hayes & Curran 7 years later. Mason Hayes & Curran was a small firm of some 40 people at the time. I believe the current number totals some 600. I have seen the firm grow in those years to be one of the top firms in Ireland.
The Debt Recovery Department has team of 16 people. I specialise in Debt Recovery as a Senior Legal Executive, and I cover all aspects of District, Circuit and High Court proceedings to Judgment and enforcement. My years of knowledge and expertise also allows me to talk to prospective clients and bring them through the legal process step by step noting what options best suit their needs in the current market, weather pre-legal or legal. The increase in the cost of living and rise in inflation has the potential to have an adverse impact on debt recovery. Therefore, taking proactive steps to tackle debt as a creditor and to resolve unpaid debt issues as a debtor can facilitate a swift resolution to solving problems without court intervention.
My favourite part of the job is being able to start work early in the mornings. My working day starts at 6am in the office. I call the 3 hours up to 9am "the golden hours". I feel I can apply myself during those hours and be very productive dealing with issue that arise daily.
Talk us through a typical day for you.
I am in the office at 6am. I print my diary of files to be reviewed that day together with the Legal Diary which lists cases to be heard. I ensure Counsel and our agents have been briefed. I take last minute instructions from clients which may alter daily court applications. I also deal with receipt of last-minute Affidavits from solicitors for Defendants. In some instances, I attend court in respect of contentious cases. My diary will also contain a list of cases where we are instructed to issue proceedings, follow up with defendants seeking payment and emails/letter to clients seeking further instructions.

What's your idea of a perfect holiday/favourite place you've ever visited?
I love the sun and history.
Sun = Australia I have visited 4 times travelling along the east coast. Travelling from Sydney up to Cairns – The Great Barrier Reef, Whitsunday Islands.
History = My favourite history holiday was to Egypt in 1998. I sailed down the Nile from Luxor to Aswan and soaked up all the fantastic history and sights, visiting the Valley of the Kings, Philae Temple, Abu Simbel Temple, Cairo Museum. It really was like stepping back in time. I would go love to go back.
