MHC Intern Life: Rachel Kilkenny
For the next MHC Intern Life we talk to Rachel Kilkenny, who graduated last year from Law Plus at University of Limerick. Rachel tells us about the department she's working in and her first impressions of the firm.
What inspired you to choose law?
My initial attraction to law was sparked by attending open days at colleges, hearing students talk about the variety of study/practice areas within law. Since beginning my legal studies in 2018, I recognised the diversity and flexibility of the law and was fascinated by how the law is reformed to adapt to our ever-changing society. The law has the capability to impact on such a large scale and the opportunity to be involved in the progression of the law has always interested me.
Where did you study and why?
There were several factors that led to my decision to study at the University of Limerick. Firstly, the course Law Plus allows students to study an arts elective in addition to law modules, I chose to study politics as I believed it complemented law nicely. Secondly, students complete an 8-month cooperative placement which is an excellent opportunity to gain an insight into the legal sector prior to graduating. Lastly, the opportunity to go on Erasmus swayed me towards studying at UL. I studied at University of Bologna for Erasmus which took place during the pandemic and was truly a unique opportunity.
What department are you working with at MHC?
I was placed in the Construction department on the Environment and Planning team. I initially had very little knowledge of this area, however, everyone on the team was very approachable and happy to answer any questions.
I enjoy the variety of work within the team, I have attended court online, visited An Bord Pleanála, and been given tasks which have enabled me to develop a greater understanding of the work done within this department. Along with that, the firm hosted the ULI talk on the Planning & Development Bill Update which I found extremely interesting as it related to my department.
What is your favourite quote?
‘The only time you fail is when you stop trying’ – Albert Einstein.
What was your first impression of MHC?
My first impression of the firm was the positive and encouraging atmosphere. Everyone in the firm is friendly and approachable. There is an amazing culture within the firm, and I have been made to feel extremely welcome. I was also fascinated by the impressive art collection in the office.
