For our next post in the MHC Intern Life series, we talked to Pearse Woods, a final year student of Politics, Philosophy and Economics at University College Dublin. Pearse tells us why he chose law and the department he’s currently working in during his internship.

What inspired you to choose law?

Initially I didn’t choose law heading into university, rather Politics, Philosophy and Economics, but I have always had an interest in law and how legal reforms impact the world in such a broad and significant way. In the past three years, I have attended events in university such as panel discussions from lawyers and trainees where they shared their experiences, as well as mooting competitions and mock trials. Since then, I have pursued a career in law as it presents the rewarding opportunity of working with others as part of a team to deliver innovative solutions to solve a vast range of legal issues.

Where did you study and why?

I am heading into my final year of Politics, Philosophy and Economics at University College Dublin. I chose this course because I have always had a great interest in learning more about how the world around us works. The ability to expand my knowledge of the three subject areas has been a fascinating experience. Additionally, I was drawn to UCD because of its energetic student life and the vast range of extra-curriculars afforded to students. I have really enjoyed the past three years at UCD. I have made memories for life and so many great friends, so it is sad to see it coming to an end after next year. However, I am really looking forward to the next steps in my career.

What department are you working with at MHC?

I am working with the Commercial team. When starting with the Commercial department at first, I had little knowledge of the area, but the entire team have been really welcoming, have offered invaluable guidance and have been more than happy to answer any of my questions. I am really enjoying my time in the the department and I’m excited to continue getting hands-on, practical experience so I can learn more about the range of high-quality work done by the team.

What is your favourite quote?

“Don’t Count the Days, Make the Days Count” – Muhammad Ali.

What was your first impression of MHC?

While walking through the doors of the firm for the first time was mostly exciting but also slightly nerve-racking, any fears that I had were quickly put to rest. Every person I’ve met and talked to here have been friendly, approachable and helpful. We are always encouraged to ask questions and get involved in as much work as possible. Throughout the entirety of the firm, it’s clear that the culture is welcoming, supportive and inclusive.
