Aoibhe: MHC Intern Life

For the next MHC Intern Life, we talked to Aoibhe Walsh, who is entering her final year of law in University College Dublin. Aoibhe tells us about her first impression of us, why she chose law and the department she’s currently working in during her internship.

What inspired you to choose law?

My decision to pursue a career in law was influenced by various factors. Firstly, having a mother who worked as a solicitor exposed me to the legal field from an early age and ignited my interest in law. Additionally, during my transition year in school, I had the opportunity to shadow a barrister in the criminal courts, which undoubtedly sparked my interest in pursuing a career in law. Lastly, I must admit that the popular series 'Suits' played a role in capturing my imagination and glamorising the life of a lawyer, ultimately contributing to my decision to pursue law as a career.

Where did you study and why?

I am entering my final year of law in University College Dublin (UCD). I opted for UCD for several reasons. Firstly, UCD's Law School has a strong reputation, which attracted me to pursue my studies there. Additionally, UCD offers a wide range of extracurricular activities and societies, including excellent sports facilities, which was particularly appealing to me as I am actively involved in sports. UCD's proximity to my home was also a practical factor that influenced my decision, making it convenient for me to commute to campus.

What department are you working with at MHC?

I am working in the corporate department here. While I have had some experience in litigation and working in the courts, corporate was not an area I had much experience in previously. I was therefore pleased to be placed in this department as I was eager to gain insights and knowledge about the transactional side of law. I am thoroughly enjoying working in this department and I have really enjoyed being surrounded by such a great team.

What is your favourite quote?

My favourite quote would have to be Samuel Beckett’s, “Ever tried. Ever failed. No Matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better. “

What was your first impression of MHC?

From the moment of my first interview, my first impression of the firm was extremely positive. The friendly and welcoming atmosphere immediately stood out to me, and I knew leaving my interview that this would be an ideal place for me to work. This impression was further reinforced during my internship as I received a warm reception and worked with many enthusiastic and helpful individuals. I think the open office floor plan which the firm has adopted definitely contributes to the friendly and open culture of the firm and definitely makes it stand out from other firms.
