To kick off our new MHC Intern Life series, we talked to Alan McDonagh, a graduate of Law Plus at University of Limerick. Alan tells us why he chose law and the department he’s currently working in during his internship.
What inspired you to choose law?
My interest in law was sparked during my Transition Year work experience when I had the privilege of shadowing a solicitor in court. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and found the legal field to be incredibly exciting. During my Leaving Certificate, I attended a host of university open days and listened to law students share their experiences. These interactions solidified my decision to pursue law, as I was drawn by the dynamic nature of the profession, the diverse career opportunities it offers, and the chance to work closely with clients.
Where did you study and why?
I chose to study Law Plus at the University of Limerick due to its vibrant campus culture and the unique opportunities it offers. The 8-month work placement programme was a significant draw, providing me with invaluable hands-on experience working with solicitors across both criminal and civil law sectors. Another key aspect of the programme was the ability to combine my law degree with another non-legal discipline. I was always intrigued by sociology and after a few ‘taster’ lectures, I decided to choose it as my minor.
What department are you working with?
I am currently working in the Real Estate department. I was excited to begin my internship here as I have never worked in this area of law before. I enjoyed property law at university and it’s been incredibly interesting to move from that into seeing what a real practice is like and how it operates. I am particularly enjoying the exposure to high quality clients, intellectually stimulating work, and of course, the friendly team. So far, every day has been very different and I am eager to make the most of my internship experience here with the department.

What was your first impression of MHC?
I first joined the firm as a Caseworker in the Insurance and Risk team. While the large size of the firm was initially daunting, there was an approachability and openness that made me feel instantly at ease. From partner level to support staff, the supportive environment and ethos of the firm is carried through by all. Questions are encouraged and my colleagues are always willing to lend a helping hand or offer guidance.
