MHC Intern Life: Aisling Neary
For our next post in the MHC Intern Life series, we talked to Aisling Neary, a graduate of Business and Law at University College Dublin. Aisling tells us why she chose law and the department she’s currently working in during her internship.
What inspired you to choose law?
My interest in law began in secondary school when a lawyer spoke to us about what a career in law might entail. The concept of a career in a dynamic and fast-paced environment intrigued me. My interest was further sparked after attending multiple university open days and hearing first-hand what studying law would involve. The many career opportunities which a degree in law can provide and the wide range of sectors within the legal field greatly appealed to me.
Where did you study and why?
I studied business and law in University College Dublin. I chose to study in UCD due to the unique opportunity to graduate with a double major. Having a limited idea of what studying law might be like, I thought it was a good idea to keep my options open and I had enjoyed business in school so decided that was a safe bet. I also believed that the business modules might provide me with the commercial awareness necessary in the legal sphere and therefore stand to me in a potential future career in law. The opportunity to go on Erasmus also appealed to me and I was fortunate enough to study at Bocconi University in Milan for six months.
What department are you working with at MHC?
I am currently working in the Financial Services department. Although I have some experience working in this area, it has fascinated me to see the many varieties of work which take place in the department. Everyone on the team is very approachable and eager to involve me in their work as much as possible. In the short time I have been here I have had the opportunity to work on multiple transactions and listen in on several client calls.
What is your favourite quote?
“Nothing is permanent except change.” – Heraclitus.
What was your first impression of MHC?
On my first day here, it quickly became clear to me that the friendly and welcoming environment I had experienced throughout the interview process definitely continued when starting at the firm. The open plan layout of the office was hugely helpful in creating a relaxed working environment where I was never afraid to approach someone to ask a question or have a chat.
